We had a great weekend up north. It was a whirlwind of a trip with a ton of driving, but it was a good time.
Ryan got to show me around his college campus and I was so proud of him when he was presented with his big award. We also got to spend time with some old friends we haven't seen in a while and they were generous enough to let us stay at their house Friday night. We loved seeing their two kids, who are so cute, although it does remind us of what we are missing out on. We also got to spend time with my family on Saturday night and Sunday, so that was a nice bonus.
We got home early this morning. Then shortly after we woke up today Ryan realized he'd been honored again - by being named one of the two best political reporters in our state by the Washi.ngton Po.st! It really is a huge honor, especially because he has only been doing this two years. I don't have any kids to be proud of, but at least I have my husband!
So tomorrow we are heading up 95 N once again, for an ultrasound appointment with Dr. L. I don't really know what to expect. I'm hoping she will agree to do the trigger shot, but will that depend on what my follicle looks like? I'm afraid she will say that I don't need one, and because I have no real idea what the shot is actually for, I don't know how to argue my case. It could be that she is already planning on giving me the trigger. I shouldn't get ahead of myself.
I'm also worried about getting subsequent ultrasounds this week because I have adoration on Wednesday, plans with GIMH and Fertile Thoughts on Thursday and then we're heading out of town for a weekend trip (belated anniversary getaway) on Friday. Tomorrow is cycle day 13 and I usually ovulate late, like around day 17 or 18 which will be this weekend. Does anyone know how a trigger shot works? Could she do an ultrasound on Thursday, see that it looks like I'll ovulate over the weekend and plan for me to do the trigger myself? I really need to read up on this.
I'll let you know how it all goes...

In my case, they wanted to see a follicle measuring 1.8 cm (or 18 mm). I normally had to go in a couple of times for u/s before one follicle got big enough (my follies are slow growers). Once they saw one measuring that size, my DH was to give me a HCG trigger shot that same night (your Dr. would probably do it there) which would induce me to ovulate that mature follicle/egg. We were told to BD that night and the next 3 nights.
ReplyDeleteAgain, (I know I always say this) I was with an RE & on stimulation meds. (although this protocal was always the same whether I was on pills alone or with injections). I know your dr. and treatment plan is very different and I'm sure he/she has different standards and criteria. Just wanted to shed some light from my end.
Glad you had a great trip. Congratulations to Ryan. I've got to save the link and go and read it a little later.
Congrats again to Ryan! That is so exciting for you both. I'm glad the weekend trip was fun. It's always nice to get away!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the sono appointment with Dr. L... mine is Friday morning. In my case she gave me a prescription for the HCG trigger shot and I had to get it filled (which ended up being more difficult than I thought... I had to use Freedom Pharmacy and they shipped it to me.) I am bringing the shot with me to my sono on Friday and depending on what she sees, she will give me this shot. I think she prefers to do it the first time and if this is something we do again, perhaps I will be able to give it myself.
I hope this helps! I don't think they have these injections in the office, so you would have to fill a prescription first.
Keep me posted on what she says!
I just went through my first trigger... I'm now on CD 24 and trying to get through the next week's wait before testing. What happened with me: I had to take clomid to encourage my follies to grow. I did ultrasound on CD12 where they measured size and quantity of follies; I had 3 at 13,15,18. From size and cycle day, they can determine how fast they are growing but I've been told they grow btwn 1-2 mm per day and they want them at around 18-20 to trigger. They wanted to inject me right then and there but my hCG wasn't due to arrive by FedEx until the following day. So my husband injected me the next evening and whereas the Clomid encourages your follies to grow, the hCG trigger shot encourages your body to ovulate and release those follies. This happens about 36 hours after the injection. We ended up cancelling our IUI for many reasons and just BD'd through the weekend, timing our first encounter at about 24 hours post trigger.
ReplyDeleteWishing you luck and praying for your sanity. I know mine's surely been tested throughout this process. Sending prayers.
Congratulations to Ryan! What fantastic accomplishments!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI've only been given a trigger shot once and it was at the evil fertility clinic (the one that told us that IVF was the only way to have a baby and adoption wasn't 100%!).
Good luck with your appointment!!!
JB, I love that story and I never get sick of hearing it... it just makes me laugh!!! Adoption isn't 100%?? Oh, and IVF is, right??
ReplyDeleteCrazy fertility clinic.
I was only given a trigger once, too, and it was early on in my journey (spring or summer '07?) when my Dr suspected LUF. But she said the next day when it had ruptured that she probably jumped the gun and I didn't have a problem Oing without the trigger.
BUT, I believe she gave it to me when the follie was around 2 cm (20mm). My follies tend to pop between 2 to 2.4 cm.
Congratulations to Ryan! I hope you are able to trigger. I trigger once on CD 17. I'd use right after trigger and then at least once or twice in the next two days.
