Potential adoption situation

I need your prayers. A fellow blogger was kind enough to alert me to a potential adoption situation today. After speaking with a couple individuals and getting all the details of the situation, we are definitely interested.

There is just one catch - we need to come up with $25,000. And we don't have it.

Here's the story in brief - a couple backed out of adopting a one-month-old biracial baby girl today. The birthmother has surrendered her rights and the baby is in the care of a nanny who the attorney's office uses to care for babies before they're placed. The baby is healthy, but born premature, although she was developmentally further along than expected at birth, is gaining weight like she should be, tests fine in everything, and has been called perfectly healthy by a pediatrician this week.

The woman I spoke with from the law office said the first couple to come forward wanting to adopt this baby will get the baby (assuming they check out and everything works out). As of this afternoon, there was one other couple who had inquired about the baby although the woman wasn't sure how interested they were. I told her I am extremely interested, and the only thing holding us back was trying to come up with the money.

We'd have to have the money when we picked up the baby (not sure how soon that would be, though, since our home study would have to be reviewed under the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children). But even if a bank was willing to give us a loan (which I still think is a long shot in this economy), it would take a while, probably too long. So that's not an option.

I'm not sure what we're going to do at this point, but I feel at peace about it. We're going to pray that somehow the money comes together miraculously, and if not, then the baby was meant for someone else and we'll continue to wait.

I'd appreciate your prayers for all involved.

  3. wow. some thing just drop in your lap don't they? I think that the doors will either be open or shut with the money (for example, maybe the bank will give it to you-and fast-you never know till you try) and that is how you will know. You sound good, at peace. I will def pray. I also wanted to add a good friend adopted a biracial baby who had been exposed to cocaine and he has no problems whatsoever and is the most gorgeous thing on the planet. just fyi.

  6. Praying. so. hard.

Don't worry about the money. It will come...just walk in faith, accept the baby in faith, and you will get that money! (I can only say this because I have seen it happen again and again!)

  11. Have you thought about selling paintings? The painting you did as a Christmas present was so amazing! I know you obviously can't paint enough to make $25,000 that quickly, but if you took orders for paintings now, maybe you could get a chunk of that money. I know I would love to buy a painting from you, and it would probably be a Christmas present for next year so wouldn't need it anytime soon. Just an idea- probably one that you've already thought of!

  12. I already have a movie and want to donate. Your bday is on Saturday and will make it a monetary gift in honor of your special day. Where is your paypal button?!!!

  13. Wait, okay, but in all seriousness, do you get EVERY PENNY for the movie? (Not that I don't still want it - I do, and I'm going to get it!)

But I'll buy extra copies if you get every cent and have no overhead for it. Otherwise, I'll mail you a check or Paypal ya so we can get AS MUCH AS WE CAN.

  15. Cathy - I have a box of DVDs sitting in my house right now.. waiting to be sold! But don't feel like you have to!

You guys are all so sweet!!

If we get enough money for the initial adoption, we'll have an additional $2,800 to pay later for court fees, so maybe the painting idea is a good way to raise money for that. I'll let you all know!

  17. It's your birthday on Saturday?? I foresee monetary gifts as a birthday present...

    We're all rallying behind you!

  18. I second (or third...fourth?) the Paypal suggestion! You will continue to be in my prayers!

  19. Okay, you have five fewer DVDs now.
    But!

I just need one, so save the rest and keep the change.

Since it's YOUR paypal button, can't people (even people who already have the DVD) just go, put in however many DVDs x $10 and donate? If they want the DVD fine, but if they don't, you still get the money, right??

I'm linking to the DVDs on my blog...

  21. Can your parish do a spaghetti dinner? (It's just so easy to fix, and so cheap.)

Throw in a $50 keg o' beer for the folks (is that what they cost these days?) and I'll bet people would GLADLY pay $20 a head, knowing the worthy cause.

    Or hot dogs, or something?

Or if not your parish, could you pass the word and do it at home? Leave a jar on a table for donations?

Ohhhhhh, WHY CAN'T I BE RICH?????!!!!!

  22. If you can get a paypal button, I'll bet I can get some people to donate. Is it possible to just donate money to you through the "Watch With Me" site, or would that somehow mess with your taxes or something (I have no idea)?

I'm having people over tonight and it's going to be really hard not to check back here while I have guests!

  23. Praying and knowing it will all come together. :)

  26. I am SOOOOO SORRY I haven't read/responded 'til now!!!

Sew texted me earlier to let me know, and a friend of mine whom I haven't seen in over 3 yrs just came for NYE.

But nothing could keep me from this blog!!

I SWEAR I'm not making this up, but as I was vacuuming my guest room in preparation for my friend, I was thinking about you - and I was thinking, "You know what? I think K is going to be one of those people who gets a call to come and pick up a baby who's already been born!!" And then I was thinking, how you and R would be running around crazy shopping for cribs and whatnot ;)

And then not an hour later Sew texted me with the news. HOLY. MOLY. I know it's not set in stone yet, but I am praying my heart out for this!!! I pray THIS is your baby, K!!!!!!

  29. WAIT!!!

How much can a girl miss by going to a vigil mass and taking her husband out to dinner for his birhtday?
I am blown away! I am so doggone excited, I am so glad you are sounding peaceful. I do believe that mountains can be moved when God is ready to make some awesome miracles happen!

She sounds heavenly and I will pray that God's will be done and that all of your hearts are blessed and protected!

I will be praying for you! Keep us updated!

Today's homily was about "nothing is impossible with God" and our priest used this in reference to the empty wombs of Sarah and Mary! Sarah waited years to be blessed with a full womb and God miraculously fulfilled that desire according to his will and Mary's womb was empty for a reason - she was a virgin! Yet, God brought life to that womb because she gave him permission to fulfill his will in her life. Nothing is impossible with God! Just wanted to share that with you! I hope you have to apologize to 2009! Now that is said with deepest of hopes that it has ended on a great note :)
