Vitamin questions

So I am in need of some B6. The Tamoxifen has apparently dried me up, and even though I'm on day 14 of my cycle, I still went in search a bottle of 500 mg timed release B6 (Tues. was day 14). I haven't ovulated yet, as far as I know, so I'm hoping it's not too late for it to help me this cycle.

Just like I expected, I could not find it anywhere. We went to five stores that I can remember. There may have been more.

How do you all find it? The reason I haven't taken it in years (besides the fact that I didn't really need it) was because I thought you had to order it from that special pharmacy in Omaha. But then I read on several blogs that it can be found in health food stores, even Walm.art. Well, apparently not where I live.

The closest we found was a bottle of 300 mg timed release and another bottle of 500 mg that isn't timed release. A friend told me that taking two 300 mg, one in the morning and one in the evening, would be fine, so I'm going back out in the morning to buy that one.

While we were on our quest for B6, I also bought some new prenatal vitamins. I'm constantly confused about what separates good ones from not-as-good ones, but I found a box at G.NC that had more folic acid - 1000 mg(?) - that any of the rest I had seen, so I bought them. They weren't too expensive ($20), but that actually made me nervous because I have heard good ones are more costly. I haven't opened them yet, so is there anything else I should look for to determine if they're good? Any other vitamins that should be in certain amounts?

I just feel so clueless when it comes to this. I should just relax, I know. When it comes to the B6, it's not like I've had no mucus, it just hasn't been lubricative. Today (Tuesday.. I haven't gone to bed yet) I will chart 10K x3. Yesterday was 10K x1, if I remember correctly. It's just not the same, though. But, then again, different is good!

Okay, this is sort of stream of consciousness, so I'm going to go to bed. I'd appreciate any advice you have, though!

  1. I would love to see any type of good mucus more than once a day! 3 times! That is why I think I do lack mucus sometimes. I remember it being plenitful. Who knows?

Vitamins is a sour subject for me. I sometimes think they don't work. If the vitamins in them are not real then what good is it. Its like eating boxed food but expecting quality of fresh food. Just my humble opinion. I have never taken a vitamin that I couldn't love without except for Cod Liver Oil. I would love to know if it works for you! I will buy them!

  2. well i have a bottle of timed-release B6 that i can't take since i had ALL the nasty side-effects. i know that it will probably get to you too late, but i can mail it to you! just send your mailing addy to me and i'll get it in the mail ASAP!

i had to get the B6 from a compounding pharmacy in my neighbourhood. a lot of my prescriptions have to be filled there (like the low dose naltrexone) as well as my hubby's vitamins. we're lucky that our drug plan has covered so many of the medications (the pharmacist fills out a special letter to send to our insurance company).

i hope that when i see my napro doctor at the end of the month she can suggest something else to take since my fertile CM didn't show up until yesterday!

btw, i also get my vitamins from the compounding drug store. they have a really great homeopathic and vitamin section and their employees are very knowledgeable. since i have so many dietary restrictions i'm glad that i have a place to get good quality supplements!

  3. No advice on the B6... but as for the vitamins, the best advice I can give is to make sure the absorption percentage of the ones you're using is high. Most OTC vitamins I've encountered are worthless because your body doesn't absorb but maybe 10-20% of what the label says you're getting. They way a vitamin is compounded greatly impacts its absorption. Liquid does not mean higher absorption, either. The every-day vitamins I use are from the company Melaleuca and they're compounded with fructose, which your body naturally absorbs at the cellular level so overall, you're getting about 80-90% absorption of the total vitamin and wasting very little. Good luck!

  4. Not sure on the B6, but sounds like you've got that under control now. My prenatals are called "Prenatal Plus Tabs", but I pick them up at the pharmacy. My dr prescribed them so insurance covers them. I think I get 100 pills for $4. Maybe your doc can prescribe them too, so your insurance will pick them up. Then you won't have to worry about getting the "good" ones. Good luck!

  5. Hi!
I will send you Marilyn Shannon's Fertility, Cycles, and Nutrition, which contains a list of nutrients and their amounts that is (supposedly) most helpful for people like us.

It really helped me when I was vitamin shopping. I tried to find one with as many as those listed in those amounts.

Vitamins stress me out! Taking them does, too!!! Ahhh!!

  6. No advice on the B6, but for a good multi-vitamin I take Juice Plus. It is whole food nutrition in capsule form. My nurse practitioner recommended it and I love it! I've been taking it for about 14 months so far. Here is the web site with all the info and such.... https://www.juiceplus.com/nsa/pages/Home.soa?site=cs83207

Also, I have changed my blog to "private" because of some issues at my hubby's work... but if you (or anyone else) would like to read it, just send me an email (mermay1677@yahoo.com) and I'll send you an invitation.

  7. Huh. That's wild! I've always gotten my B6 at a vitamin/natural food store, and that's one vitamin I've never had trouble finding. How frustrating! (I did accidentally buy the wrong dosage and took 1000 mg at a time before I figured it out, but that's another story.)

  8. I take Rainbow Lite prenatals... mostly because when I was in the health food store trying to pick one out, some nosey granola-ey hippie told me she LOVED them, and took them while TTC, pg, and BFing. I figured, if they were good enough for her crunchy taste... lol!

But I also take a small Rx folic acid pill. I know that's one of the most important vitamins for early pg and TTC.

So sorry about the run-around with the B6! I wonder if you could find them online? Maybe at discount vitamins and herbs?

  9. Wow, I'm learning a lot from your post and all these comments! I have NEVER been a vitamin person - even growing up. I remember other kids taking the Flinstone vitamins and I always wanted some because they looked like candy! Anyways, I wasn't a vitamin taker before trying to conceive and my doctor hasn't suggested any for me. (Hence my question earlier about prenatals.) Keep me (us) posted on what you learn! I appreciate all the advice.

  10. I always get mine at Vitamin Cottage. I don't know if you have one where you're at but here's the link http://www.vitamincottage.com/vitamin_b6_by_country_life_60_tablets_500_mg_it-p-1723.html

  11. Three times, wow! I'm at once or not at all too. So I am thinking I should get some vitamins as well. I am reading all these comments with interest. Do you know if there are any downsides/concerns to taking the B6? What are the bad side effects, JellyBelly?
Thanks! Blog fan and infrequent commenter,
    Ali

  12. The B6 never really worked for me. The best mucus enhancers for me are mucinex and amoxicillin. Could you ask your dr. about other enhancers? Our practice will rx these 2 meds when a woman is on letrozole (which is similar to tamoxofin). You can definately find the B6 online, though. :)

  13. I'm with Jeremiah 29:11, the only vitamins I really know about are flintstones kids and vitamin C. However, all you need to really worry about in terms of prenatal vitamins is the folic acid. Everything else in there is eh. The foic acid amount is important and I think yours carries the recommended amount. Good luck!
