Heading home

Our six-day trek back across America began yesterday, this time with three (three!) babies in the back of the van.

We're taking it slow this time. That is, if ten hours of driving in one day can be considered "taking it slow." I'm still not sure how we did it in two-and-a-half days last weekend.

We're really doing great. Baby Essie is wonderful (and gained weight at her check-up before we left. Yay!). And I'm pretty sure it's a powerful combination of grace and adrenaline that's getting us through. And videos. Not sure how parents survived before portable DVD players.

Nursing is still going well, although I can't wait to be able to do it while just relaxing on my couch. So far I've breastfed in two restaurants and one church. And I'm sure that tally will only go up over the course of the week.

We just pulled off the highway because it was snowing, and thankfully we got one of the last hotel rooms in town. Now the kids are running around our spacious room, acting a little nutso. We're hoping they wind down sometime before 2 a.m. (our expectations are very low lately).

Before I go, here are some scenes from our trip home so far, taken with my phone. Anyone recognize the house in the last one (hint - it was taken in Albuquerque)?

  8. Yay and congratulations!! We were driving from AZ to CA yesterday and while my two under two (awaiting a third via adoption) were crying, I told my husband about you traveling with your three across country... he was amazed... but understanding the adoption world well, he knows we'd do the same!! Good luck and many prayers for your journey home!

PS- Essie is adorable and what a cute name!!

    1. I love that you were discussing our trip while on your trip! And two under two is no joke! I actually think we have it easy because none of ours are in that 2-month to one-year age. For us, that's been the toughest in the car because they're not sleepy newborns, yet you can't reason with them or even know what they want/need. Thanks for the prayers!

  10. Is that the house where Clara was being cared for/you picked her up from? Are you able to nurse exclusively, or are you supplementing after nursing? Regardless, I am so amazed by God's hand in all this, that you're able to seamlessly (I hope) breastfeed your beautiful newest addition. Welcome, Essie!!! Congratulations! You are all very blessed, indeed! Prayers for safe and sane travels home.

    1. Betsy - Oh, that would be much sweeter if it was the house Clara was cared for in! It's actually the main character's house from the TV show Breaking Bad. I know.. kinda lame compared with your guess.. haha!

I am supplementing, but it's only after she nurses for a very long time and is still hungry. I'm not sure yet if it's due to my supply, or her tongue tie. If we were home, we'd probably have figured that out by now, but since we are traveling, I'm just supplementing for now and will deal with it next week. The bottle doesn't seem to affect her nursing at all though, thank goodness! She seems like she'd actually rather nurse!

    2. LOL, ah yes, the TV show mini-pilgrimage: My hubby and I visited Hawaii and while there, stopped by the LOST locations. :) Anyway... I'm so glad you already know about her tongue-tie. My youngest has lip-tie which we only discovered around 16 months, after she self-weaned, being the poorest nurser of my 3, by far! I wish we'd known earlier. She was so skinny and I always just thought she didn't have much appetite. Maybe that was part of it, but a simple procedure probably would've helped a lot. Praying that nursing continues well for you and improves once you get home! Again, I'm so thrilled for your family! God bless you!

  11. What a holiday journey you've been on! I'm glad all went well and ICPC was cleared so quickly. This seems like a whirlwind but I know it has been in the works for several months. Congrats!
