Recovering

Well, reality kind of set in the last couple days. I have been in more pain, much worse than the first two days.

I really miss that handy button I could push for drugs in the hospital. I wish I had that every day. Feeling a little less than perfect? Just push the button and all your troubles will go away!

On Saturday morning, I started to get a gnawing feeling, like I was super hungry but I wasn't (it had nothing to do with hunger, just felt like it. Separately, I've been eating fine. Lots, actually). It was excruciating and wouldn't go away. We're still not sure if it was from the vicoden, the trapped gas, or both. After my second dose of vicoden and a nap, I woke up and felt much better. The same exact thing happened on Sunday. Woke up with pain, took a vicoden, got the terrible gnawing hunger feeling, suffered through it, took another vicoden hours later, fell asleep, and woke up feeling better. Both days, though, I felt sick again at night.

So to try to avoid that today, I stopped taking vicoden. Instead, I'm taking four advil every four hours (my doctor originally told me to switch between vicoden and four advil every four hours, so this isn't much different). So far, I do not have the terrible gnawing hunger feeling, but my abdomen does hurt more than it has in the last few days. That's fine. I'll take that over the other stuff.

Other than that, I am definitely out of it, but it's okay. I have nothing to do but sit on the couch. I just don't want to be nauseous. My stomach isn't totally fine, but I'm not in agony like the last couple days. And as long as I can eat, I'm content.

Well I've been working on this post off and on for several hours now so I'm just going to end it. Time for a nap.

  3. Glad to hear you're still taking it easy! Just a small word of caution, though: is that a total of 800mg ibuprofen that you're taking every four hours? I'm wondering if your doctor meant to alternate the vicodin and ibuprofen every four hours, meaning 8 hours between doses of each, because 800mg of ibuprofen should only be taken every 8 hours. Taking too much might actually be upsetting your stomach more. :(

Walking will help with the gas pain, and you might try sipping some hot herbal tea.

Praying the rest of your recovery is speedy and pain free! You're so lucky to have your mom there with you!

  4. Good for you making the switch from vicodin to advil alone so quickly! I remember being really proud of myself for doing that (I had percocet and went to motrin), and it really is quite an accomplishment! :)

It must be so nice to have your mom around, for obvious reasons, but also because she is witnessing EVERYTHING you are going through to get this baby, and when she is babysitting her grandchild one day she'll be able to tell them, "Do you know just how much your mommy loves you? Let me tell you..."

  6. I hope you start to heal sooner rather than later! I hate having to take vicodin, sometimes it feels like a necessary evil right?

  7. I never comment but read faithfully. That much ibuprofen might be causing more abdominal pain! Ypu should only take 800mg every 8 hrs. You might even try alternating it with 1000mg Tylenol (no more than 4000mg per 24 hrs) so you are taking something every 4 hrs. Best wishes for a fast recovery.

  8. Isn't it strange that something stupid like gas can cause so much pain? It's crazy. (And gas pills haven't worked for me, so I don't know that they'd help post-op either.) I'm glad to hear you're feeling (a little) better. Be up and around soon!

  9. Thanks everyone! I only started taking the four advil today, and that's only because the vicodin was making me sick the last two days. I know it's not ideal, but I really need it to help with the pain and the vicodin is not an option. But I always take it with food, and try to hold off as long as possible. At the moment, it's been more than six hours since my last dose.

So far the advil is working very well, just not making me as pain-free as the vicodin was (if only the vicodin didn't upset my stomach!). I still have some abdominal pain (not stomach pain, but actual pain from the surgery) but I'd rather have that than the side-effects from the vicodin (we're not totally sure the vicodin was causing that pain, but I didn't have it today when I eliminated the vicodin).

Plus tonight I walked FAR!! Really far! Like almost a mile! My mom and I set out just for a little stroll down the street and I felt good so we just kept going. I think that has helped me more than anything!
