...that I'm 20 weeks! It just seems like such a milestone. It always sounded so far away, to be half way. And it means I've reached the point where the baby's moving, the baby's getting a lot bigger (apparently he or she is now the size of a large banana!), and the baby can now even get a taste of what I eat (in the amniotic fluid). And I'm looking a little more pregnant these days, too (the other day I was the most pregnant-looking woman shopping in the Old Navy maternity section, which was a weird realization!). It all makes it so much more real!
Earlier this week when my sister gave birth (thanks for all your well wishes for her, by the way!), seeing her belly picture one minute and her holding a baby the next really made it real for me. There's a baby in there! There's an actual human baby in my stomach!
I know this should be obvious. And, really, I know how reproduction works. I really do. But it's still difficult for me to wrap my mind around the fact that I'm a part of all that! It's still hard to imagine a human baby...in there!
Okay, anyways... So I'm experiencing some different symptoms these days, and I'm not saying any of this to complain but, rather, to document it.
First and foremost, my heartburn is OUT OF CONTROL. I take a lot of tums, all day long. And it doesn't matter what I've had to eat. I've had it all along but it really escalated about two or three weeks ago.
I'm also fatigued beyond belief. I nap (if Clara does too) every day, usually at some point between three and six. And in the evening, when Clara gets fussy sometimes before bed, I find that I start to get really discouraged. I wonder, if it's hard to handle one fussy baby, how I'll possibly do it all with two. I know it's the fatigue talking and by the next morning I'm back to normal and I know that I will be fine with two babies, by the grace of God (well, some moments probably won't be 'fine', but I'm sure the great moments will outweigh the tough ones). I assume that these feelings are completely normal, especially for someone having babies so close in age.
I also get swollen, bleeding gums at times, including tonight. My dentist told me this would happen.
My face is, for me, abnormally dry (which I've been told could mean it's a girl).
And I'm still getting that awful gnawing hunger. Some days are worse than others, but it happens every morning and if I wake in the night. Last weekend I was just stuffing my face all day long, trying to get rid of the hunger, to no avail. That's when I decided it's actually not hunger at all, but something terrible and mean, impersonating hunger.
I have some round ligament pain from time to time, and some back pain, but nothing serious.
But, oh, how my butt hurts! That's right - those progesterone shots are still at it, wreaking havoc on my ability to sit comfortably. I get a sore, red, bruised, hard round ball at the injection site, and sometimes it's worse than others. It usually doesn't appear for a day and then once it does, it gets worse before getting better. It usually starts to disappear right before it's time to have another one on that same side (which is a week later).
The good news is my progesterone is now at 42.1 (that's up from the low 30's, where it was for a couple months). Technically that means it stayed about the same, since it's supposed to be steadily rising, but at least it didn't stay in the low 30's or, worse yet, decrease. I'm now at the point where I've successfully convinced myself that it's not something to worry about anyways, but it's still nice to be moving in the right direction.
Again, I'll reiterate, I don't mind these "negative" symptoms. I truly don't! I actually think it's neat that a baby is causing me heartburn. Sure, my husband will probably be surprised to read this since, at home, I'm not above complaining. But it's all relative, and I wouldn't trade this for the world.
On Monday we'll find out the gender. I cannot wait! I thought the day would never get here. To be honest, I'm a tad bit nervous that something might be revealed to be wrong during this ultrasound (twenty weeks is where they look at all the anatomy), but I'm not losing sleep over it. My nervousness really has lessened with each appointment, which is great. Those little, tiny kicks really do help!
So at this half-way point, I am just so grateful to God for this miracle. For both of our miracles! I am in awe!

It's hard to believe

It is all so wonderfully exciting! Half way through!!!
ReplyDeleteAn old wives tale that I was told (and I am sure you have heard and will hear a lot of old wives tales too - lol) is that if you experience heart burn your baby will have a lot of hair (it was right for me). Good luck and ejoy!
I didn't mind all the symptoms either because I knew it was that little baby in there, so it was well worth it! I had to laugh about the 6 pm time -- that's the rough hour in our house, too, since DH isn't home from work yet and I've been "on the clock" with D. since he woke up (usually 5:30 am)!! You'll manage great with the two -- it will fun to see them interact. Oh, and I had no "feelings" either way about whether we were having a boy or a girl. I'm so excited for you!! (I've been reading, even if I haven't been commenting the last few months. You'll see -- the more mobile Clara gets! It's fun to see them grow and interact so much.) Oh yeah, and I had lots of heartburn, too, and everyone told me the baby would have lots of hair -- he did!
ReplyDeleteYay! I can't wait for Monday!
ReplyDeleteAnd awwhh, it sounds like your baby is going to have lots of hair...how fun! And if I'm right- it will be fun to put lots of bows in it! :)
Any guesses as to what you are having? Do you and Ryan have a hunch? Please share.
ReplyDeletePrayers for a great u/s!!!!! and a clean bill of health for you and baby #2!
Honestly for some reason I have no gut feeling! We both kind of think girl, but that's based on outside influences, like that my side of the family is all girls. Other than that, I have no clue!
ReplyDeleteThe 20 week scan is so much fun!! Well, maybe moreso for me since I know what I'm looking at :) Just make sure you tell the sonographer you want to know what they're measuring and what they're taking pictures of- you'll see the baby's cerebellum, the ventricles, the heart and it's outflow tracts, all four extremities, the umblical cord, the kidneys, the spine... it's all so cool! Ask for lots of print-outs, too (if they do that. Or maybe you can get video instead.)
ReplyDeleteCan't wait 'til Monday! Wondering if Clara is going to have a little brother?
ReplyDeleteYou will love having two close in age! My boys are 14 months apart and I was scared to death of handling two. While it was an adjustment, it was not as hard as people told me it would be.
ReplyDeleteIt really does bring a smile to my face when I read about your pregnancy. Such a blessing and a reminder of God's greatness. By the way, I had terrible heartburn the last few months of my pregnancy and my baby girl came out with a head full of black hair!!!:) Looking forward to hearing the sex of your baby. There are quite a lot of girls being born these days. Everyone told me I was having a boy, but out came a precious little girl.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I cannot wait till Monday!!!
ReplyDeleteYou will be in awe when you have that baby in your arms, too! I keep saying, "I can't believe that she came out of me!" It is amazing.
ReplyDeleteI remember those symptoms, too. The dryness, I think, could be caused by your thyroid? Have you had it checked recently? I wish I had mine checked more regularly during my pregnancy. Sorry you are so fatigued!
If you have the same ultrasound tech as I did, which I assume you would (I think there is only one there), she is really sweet. She took tons of pictures and takes time to explain all that you see on the screen.
ReplyDeleteI totally relate to the heartburn and the TUMS! When I was pregnant with Mari, Dr. B told me to take as many as I needed because the calcium is really important for your bone health since the baby uses so much of your supply now and when/if you breastfeed. It made me feel better about needing them so often and helped me to not get so annoyed by heartburn.
Yay for 20 weeks!! So exciting!
I take calcium magnesium capsules (NOT tablets) to help with heartburn, they're so much better than tums (more easily and quickly absorbed by your body).
ReplyDeleteAfter losing two babies in a row, I don't take any part of pregnancy for granted!
Can't wait to hear if baby is a boy or a girl, my guess is team pink!
We need to see a new pic! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing a girl!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait until Monday!!! And yes, I'm guessing girl too!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm dying for Monday and I can't believe you are already 1/2 way there!!!
ReplyDeleteSo excited for you and Monday! Just like with Sew, it is so surreal to come here and this be your blog with your baby Clara and your baby boy/girl on the way (I'll guess boy). I think back to this time last year and how down you were and am so overcome with happiness for all that has happened!
ReplyDeleteYay! I'm so excited to hear what you're having! Also, I had absolutely awful heartburn with my first pregnancy, and she definitely had hair. With my second, my heartburn was almost unbearable, and she was born with thick dark hair! I read somewhere that heartburn is actually the only old wives tale that has proven to be related to hair growth in babies. I would ask your OB if you can take Zantac. My OB says it's fine, and it is amazing! It worked when Tums didn't even take the edge off anymore.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I love the short prayer, "Queen of Peace, pray for us." Whenever I have a moment when both girls need me or I feel overwhelmed, this prayer just lets a sense of calm wash over me.
So simple yet so powerful! :)
I'm glad you are enjoying the ups and downs:) The heartburn is so crazy! I used to carry Pepto Bismol around in my purse and chug it when I was out:) But as baby grows, all your other organs get mashed and squished like pancakes so the HB is constant. Can't wait to hear what you are having!
ReplyDeleteI have major heartburn during pregnancy and my doctors have put me on 20 mg Pepcid AC both times. I still need to pop a Tums or 3 every day, but the Pepcid AC really works well--you don't want permanent damage to your esophagus!
ReplyDeleteAs for hunger, I always eat a "snack" (second dinner) right before bed. That way, I don't wake up ravenous in the middle of the night!
I can't believe you are halfway done! Sorry to hear about the fatigue and heartburn. So exciting that you'll find out if you have a boy or girl in there tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteAwe, you sound so sweet and joyful! I love that for you. You deserve that so much! Less than 24 hours and you will know the gender....soooo excited! Can't wait to hear:)
ReplyDeleteThe hair and heartburn correlation was definitely true with me. My midwife had me on Prilosec for the last six weeks or so. I had heartburn so bad it was dehabilitating. I couldn't sleep. I'm at 29 weeks with #2 tomorrow, and so far I have had some days when Tums work, some when I use Maalox and a million Tums with no relief, and some with no heartburn at all. I expect it will eventually end with Prilosec again.
ReplyDeleteThe halfway mark feels like such an accomplishment, doesn't it?
We don't find out genders; I actually didn't have an ultrasound this pregnancy. I love the surprise, but of course everyone's different.
A girl would be nice so you wouldn't have to buy any new things.
Can't wait to hear what you find out tomorrow!!
ReplyDeleteAnd I think the halfway point necessitates a bump picture! :-)
Tomorrow you find out! Yay!!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting all this. Even though I'm not pregnant nor have I ever been, I fear that when (God willing) it does happen, it won't feel "real"...which I thought makes me sound crazy! But hearing you say this, it reminds me that this is not crazy, but just another side effect to IF!! thanks for sharing! I pray that it continues to feel more and more real each day!
GAVISCON!!! it works wonders for heartburn. i carried one in my purse while pregnant every where i went you can take it while preggers. it works fast! get the icy mint flavour it's much better. tums did nothing for me but make me more nauseous. Happy for you both!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to hear who is in there! Do you have names for both sexes yet?
