Gaudete! Rejoice!

This may come as a surprise to you, but I don't often rejoice. I mean, really rejoice. I get happy at times, moments of joy come once in a great while...but to actually take part in the act of rejoicing? I tend to think that I'm just a person that doesn't have reason to do much of that.

A positive pregnancy test - now that would be cause for some serious rejoicing. But so far, that experience has escaped me.

But today, on Gaudete Sunday, we light the pink candle - the one that always got me excited as a kid, and still does, out of habit - and rejoice. What about those of us whose lives seem dismal and bleak, who are on the outside looking in, who won't get what we want for Christmas?

As our priest said during his homily this morning, we all have reason to rejoice - the fact that Christ died on the cross so we can spend eternity in heaven is reason enough.

Usually, pointing to something so big and huge - like, you know, the afterlife - doesn't really sink in with me like it should. That sounds terrible, but I'm just being honest. It is not tangible to me, and my infertility is here and now. The idea of rejoicing in this very moment because I'll one day, God willing, get to heaven doesn't make me mourn not having a baby any less. But, at least for today, I'm going to try to remember that I do have a reason to rejoice - and a BIG one, at that! We'll see how it goes.

On a completely different topic, I have some more aprons to show you. So WARNING - if you are one of my sisters or my mother and have found my blog and read it without my knowledge, I'd like you to stop reading because I'm about to show your Christmas presents. And I'd like you to feel really guilty if you keep on reading. And while you're at it, you should feel guilty for reading this without telling me in the first place!

Okay...

This apron is for my sister. I'm calling it (in my make-believe product line) the "Frankie" because a) that's her dog's name and so far all my aprons are named after the person-I'm-making-it-for's dog, b) it's similar to the "Sophie" but just a little different - just like the real-life Frankie (he's Sophie's real brother), and c) because I decided that while I'm naming all of my aprons girl names (for obvious reasons, of course - don't you know the apron naming rules?), Frankie can be a girl's name sometimes.

I'm a little nervous about it because it's a little eccentric, and it's not like I know she loves the fabrics or colors or anything. I was just drawn to them, but they don't really "match" in the traditional sense (although I think they match), so I went out and bought the cupcake fabric to bring them to together. I love it, but it's hard to make something for someone else. With this, I just made something I would like and I'm hoping her tastes are similar to mine, which they usually are.

I also didn't realize until I was completely finished that it's pretty short. It's a mini-skirt apron!

This one is for my mom. When I gave her an apron for her birthday she said that now she needed one for Christmas. I'm not ever sure if she remembers saying that, but she's getting one! If you're keeping track, this is still the "Sophie," but with a few additional embellishments.

I'm going to give it to her when we first get there on Monday so she can use it all during the week.

Speaking of that, I am SO excited to go home! That is reason enough to rejoice!

  2. You're going to need to hold a sewing class, together with Sew Infertile, for the rest of us!! Seriously, what an amazing craft, and talent to have... I want to be one of those moms who makes their kids' Halloween costumes and tailors their prom dresses, etc. But all I can do is knit blankets, scarves and hats :(
Those aprons are beautiful. Rejoice in all of the gifts and talents God has given you, because you have SO MANY! :)

  4. I will join you in the rejoicing today! We truly have so much to be thankful for in our lives when we stop and think about it... it should be easy to rejoice! But I'm with you, I don't always feel like it.

LOVE the aprons! I totally wish I could sew. Maybe later in life I'll try to learn. :)

  8. Sew Infertile - I'm just making them up, though I find that I keep going back to the second one I designed, the one with a poofy skirt. So now I'm sitting here trying to be more creative on the one I need to do today. Hmmm.

You should just make up a pattern.. you really can't go wrong. Or, make the "Sophie"!! It's really easy. I'd email it to you, but it's all in my head!

And if we all lived near each other we would totally have to start a sewing club!

  9. Of course you make them up! :) I am being so sarcastic! DANG IT! You are so talented! That is my problem, I need explicit directions! :) I still don't have the dang energy to sew just yet. My creative juices are starting to flow, but the energy is just not there! :(

I would be all over that sewing club! SEW MUCH FUN!

I love the way you put the fabrics together! :) Love the mini skirt idea! Love the rick rack even more!

I have made two pair of work slacks that are lined, and am too lazy to hem them. I am thinking about taking them to the tailor. Is that bad? I just can't do it. I don't know why! But one pair fits like a glove! I can't believe it. The other one is okay...I should posts pics of them.....If I remember where I stuffed them! :)

  10. Are you serious? You made PANTS? That is so impressive. Are they hard to make? And no that is not bad to take them to a tailor! You just had major surgery!

And don't you just LOVE rick rack? I am obsessed with it! I think it's the cutest thing ever.

  11. So I should be making dinner right now, but I am blogging and messing with my chart that I don't have stickers for and my follow up is tomorrow night!! :)

TCIE-will not let me slide! She is a though cookie! You should see what my husband does when she ask him questions! He freaks out! I love it!!! You know he doesn't do homework and after a 5 wk break she is going to hate us!!! Grilled cheese tonight!

Yes and no. They are hard, but not hard. The first pair I did with my instructor, whom I don't have anymore. The second pair I did by myself! I have a pair of denim slacks and capri's cut, but I haven't attempted. Cutting is the worse part, I think. :) (The denim is gorgeous and $2 a yard) I almost died!! Simplicity 4135. That pattern fits me perfectly. I did make a muslin out of an old sheet, just to see if they would fit through the thighs and butt, before I cut the material.

The waist can always be tailored. If you can read a pattern or fake it, it isn't that hard. Lining is basically just cutting two of each and then fitting it in the waistband. I didn't follow the instructions, I just looked at the picture to make them the second time around and it was much easier.

That is the whole reason I started sewing. I have thighs that don't match my waist. :) I always need everything tailored.

My husbands grandmother gave me rick rack that she bought when it was 25 cents! It is so beautiful! Antiquish! I am not going to lie I still struggle putting it on. :) I hate paying attention to detail, I can't believe I am sewing, but a lot of things can be fudged. :)

I must make dinner...Everyone in blogland is so quiet tonight. Is your blogroll updating? Mine isn't and its driving me crazy. So I usually end up going to your blog and looking at all the updates (which are none today) to see what is going on. I swear I need a life!

  12. Love the aprons! I really like the fabrics you choose. I am trying to make a small lap blanket for my mom, but I am still learning my sewing machine. I hope that your family loves their gifts.
